What it does

Four things on the water

Rules

Where you may sail, how fast, and where you may not; per waterway, from the regulations of the municipality and water boards.

in the beta

Routes

Loops and trips through the city, with what you encounter along the way.

in the beta

Bridges

Clearance for each bridge where it is known; unknown is shown as unknown, never as an estimate.

in the beta

Places and stories

Moorings, waterside terraces and what there is to see; with source and date.

the complete list, with the state of every feature, is on the features page

you get

A map of Amsterdam's waterways with rules per waterway, bridges with their clearance (or "unknown"), routes and places along the water; and while sailing, your position and what you pass.

you can

Before casting off, know what is allowed and what you fit under; choose a trip that suits your boat and your time; see what you pass underway. Not a navigation aid: signs and regulations prevail.

works for

The waterways of the municipality of Amsterdam and adjacent waterways (the app follows you roughly between Halfweg and Weesp, the IJ and Amstelveen).

Outside that area you still see the map, but no PEIL rules or bridges; the app says so there too.

For whom

Locals with a boat, and people who rent one

with your own boat

Rules and bridges you do not know by heart yet, and routes outside your usual loop.

renting a boat

Open the app before casting off: what is allowed, what is not, and what you pass.

Designed responsibly

not official

PEIL Amsterdam is an independent beta and not an official navigation or safety instrument. Signs and regulations always prevail.

privacy

Your trips stay on your device. Your location does too, except when you switch on Friends yourself: the app then temporarily shares your name and latest position with the same invitation group. No person-linked tracking and no ads.

source included

Where the dataset carries them, a rule, bridge or place includes its source and date. PEIL does not fill in a missing date.

More

What is PEIL, and what does "peil" mean

The Dutch verb peilen means measuring how something stands: the water level, the state of affairs. PEIL reads your surroundings; Amsterdam on the water is where it began. The full explanation is on What is PEIL.

Since when

PEIL Amsterdam began as an idea in February 2026 and has been a closed beta on the water since June 2026. The timeline shows month by month what was added.
